Saxenda produces less weight loss than weekly GLP-1s (~5–8% average vs 15–21% for tirzepatide) and requires daily injections. It has largely been replaced by Wegovy and Zepbound as the preferred weight-loss GLP-1 option.

⚠️ Never freeze any GLP-1 medication. If a pen has been frozen accidentally, discard it — freezing degrades the protein structure and renders the medication ineffective. Allow refrigerated pens to reach room temperature for 30 minutes before injecting to reduce discomfort.

Injection Tips — All GLP-1 Pens

  • Sites: Abdomen (2 inches from navel), outer thigh, upper arm — rotate every week
  • Depth: Subcutaneous (under the skin, into fat layer) — not intramuscular
  • Technique: Pinch skin if you're lean; insert needle at 90°; inject slowly; hold for 5–10 seconds before removing
  • Temperature: Allow pen to reach room temperature 30 minutes before injecting — cold medication is more uncomfortable and may not flow properly
  • Timing: Same day each week — set a recurring alarm. Any time of day, with or without food
  • Needle disposal: Use a sharps container — never dispose of needles in regular trash
  • Inspect before use: Check that the solution is clear and colorless — do not use if it appears cloudy, discolored, or contains particles

Frequently Asked Questions

Ozempic starts at 0.25mg once weekly for 4 weeks (tolerability dose only — not therapeutic), then increases to 0.5mg. Further escalation to 1mg and 2mg occurs in 4-week intervals based on response and tolerability.
Wegovy uses a 5-step escalation over 16 weeks: 0.25mg (weeks 1–4), 0.5mg (weeks 5–8), 1.0mg (weeks 9–12), 1.7mg (weeks 13–16), then 2.4mg maintenance. Wegovy's starter kit contains one pen for each escalation dose.
Both start at 2.5mg once weekly for 4 weeks, then 5mg, then increasing in 2.5mg steps every 4 weeks up to a maximum of 15mg. You don't have to reach 15mg — many patients stay at 5–10mg long-term.
Yes — you don't have to reach the maximum dose. Many patients achieve excellent results at intermediate doses and remain there long-term. Reaching maximum dose is not a requirement for treatment success.
Escalating faster than recommended significantly increases nausea, vomiting, and GI side effects. The escalation schedule is specifically designed to allow the GI tract to adapt gradually. Rushing escalation does not produce faster long-term results and significantly increases discontinuation risk.
